What are you are selling and where do you want to sell it?

Let's take real estate, for example. Many realtors now rely on the internet for their sales promotions. But for those who continue to advertise in the daily and weekly newspapers, circulation and location distribution are of the utmost importance.

Daily publications that encompass several towns in the area give the real estate advertiser an opportunity to set up ads that will appear in the home city but also in several towns and cities nearby.

Advertising in a weekly newspaper is beneficial because it is usually kept around the house until the appearance of the next one. There are many free weeklies available for pick-up today. One that I used to work for has four editions and covers a large territory in the most populated portion of the state. Advertising results, not only in real estate but also in other sections of these editions, are highly successful because they are complimentary and are widely circulated.

Gear your ad to a publication that targets the audience to whom you are most interested in relating. When you know where to go, you will have lots to show.

Spot and General News – Key Elements of a Publication

Spot news and general news are two main elements of daily and weekly newspapers. Spot news topics are not written with the purpose of attracting readers; they are published because something local, statewide or international has unexpectedly happened and may affect your life in some way. Spot news topics, after the first day of publication, will become general news if the event is of vast importance to society.

After moving on to general news, spot news occurrences may appear from time to time within the general news category. Take the Haitian earthquake, for example. It was a tragic spot news event immediately exposed in all major media areas. Because of international concern, the earthquake and its repercussions became general news. On a daily basis, we learn more about the death tolls, survivors, property destruction, adoption of Haitian orphans and situations that have worldwide effect. In the particular case of time-sensitive rescue efforts, the story moves back into spot news.

General news covers events that are of interest to the public as a whole, such as a city council meeting, an analysis of a police department's crime unit or the reconstruction of a park. The news is planned in advance and structured for widespread reading.

You are a news writer, but an editor, too. Know the rules of editing so that as you create your copy, it is edited as well. This must be done to reduce any and all mistakes a copy editor will find. Copy editors examine stories for proper grammar, punctuation and
writing style. Your ability to lessen the copy editor's review time is
a plus in newspaper production.

Newspapers are governed by deadlines. Serving in two capacities at the same time will benefit all those who bridge the gap from beginning to end in daily preparation.

Having been a writer and editor for a daily newspaper for 30 years and an advertising representative for a weekly newspaper for 10 years, I have a wide range of experience in these areas. Therefore, because of this, I want to share with you the elements of editing and the revenue-related skills of advertising.

I will focus on all aspects of an editor's job so that potential or new writers will understand what and what not to do when creating copy. In order for your new copy to reach the public, advertisements must be present in all journals. You may want to create ads rather than write; so, detailed instructions will be available. – Before you begin writing a piece of content, you must first identify your target audience and travel inside the mind of your reader. From this perspective, the words will flow naturally. Be sure to embrace a readership with whom you identify personally. If you are a student or a reporter and you have been given an assignment unfamiliar to you, research is critical. Interview subject matter experts as well to give you a better understanding of your topic. A well informed writer can revise copy to make it jump off the page and capture the attention of the reader. However, even the most experienced writers need a second pair of eyes to catch simple errors and misspellings. This is where hiring an editor comes into play.

– When writing ads, you are creating a commercial or sound bite. Words need to be snappy, catchy and to the point. There should be no guesswork when someone picks up a newspaper or reads an ad online. Immediately, the message should be clear. Other key elements such as date, time, special offers and reduced prices must stand out. Ideally, you want to convey deadlines: act now, don’t delay, for a limited time only. These buzz words create a sense of urgency and prompt readers to buy now. Placing your ads consistently and frequently in the same publications sets the stage for familiarity and trust. These are the building blocks to selling your information or products.
